Fertility

Acupuncture treats any type of fertility disorder. Acupuncture is often combined with herbs to treat spasmed tubes, elevated follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), repeated pregnancy loss, unexplained (idiopathic) infertility, luteal phase defect, hyperprolactinemia (when not caused by a prolactinoma), polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) with annovulatory cycles, and male factors. The exceptions are structural problems that requre surgery such as tubal adhesions which can occur as a result of pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis, but in such a situation, an individual could still benefit from acupuncture and herbs because of the potential effect of improved ovarian and follicular function.

In women with fertility issues acupuncture improves their reproductive system's overall function. Acupuncture increase the blood circulation in the ovaries and uterus in order to better nourish the egg follicles, create thicker uterine linings for implantation, improve hormonal function and relax tubes, muscles and ligaments. Additionally, acupuncture is extremely effective in treating stress, a factor which can further complicate any health problem.

In men with fertility issues acupuncture improves motility, morphology and concentration of sperm as well as any sexual health problems such as lack of libido or erectile dysfunction. Up to 30% of infertility cases are attributed to male reproductive problems. The Acupuncture Center of Richmond has an extensive herbal pharmacy which in combination with acupuncture can boost sperm production, as well as address underlying conditions that can affect sexual health.

In cases of assisted reproductive therapies(ART) or in-vitro fertilization (IVF) the studies have shown impressive results with success rates being improved by as much as 65%. Acupuncture before and after the procedures enhances several aspects of fertility. In cases of egg retrieval there are increased numbers of eggs harvested, on examination uterine linings are richer and thicker for implantation, and in general implantation rates rise with the use of acupuncture and chinese herbs.

Once a couple becomes pregnant acupuncture and herbs can be used to prevent miscarriage, nausea or morning sickness and address bleeding issues among other pregnancy related disorders. For a pregnant woman's general health acupuncture and chinese herbs can be used to treat allergies, digestive problems (acid reflux, diarrhea or constipation), back and body pain, fluid retention and several other concerns that a woman may not want to use medication for during pregnancy. Later in the pregnancy at about seven months, if a breech presentation is discovered acupuncture has a 70 to 90% success rate.
